Lecture 1: What is Ethics?

Overview:

  • Definition and Scope: Ethics, derived from the Greek word “ethos,” meaning character, is the branch of philosophy that deals with questions of morality, or what is considered right and wrong. It involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior.

  • Importance of Ethics: Ethics is essential in guiding human behavior, ensuring social harmony, and promoting individual and collective well-being. It provides the foundation for laws, social policies, and personal conduct.

  • Branches of Ethics:

    1. Normative Ethics: Concerned with establishing how things should be and what people ought to do.
    2. Meta-Ethics: Explores the nature, scope, and meaning of ethical concepts.
    3. Applied Ethics: Applies ethical principles to specific issues, such as business ethics, medical ethics, and environmental ethics.
